When did you get so Blue?
Improvised score for two performers
2018

This performance score is a strange and agonising song for a vocals and percussion. First commissioned for Pine’s Eye at the Talbot Rice Gallery, the work draws upon the critical reception certain musical genres received when they began to proliferate in British culture.

The score moves through different genres, from British jazz, to punk to happy hardcore, collaging found language from criticism with the different rhythms and vocal structures familiar to each genre. The work traces the scrutiny of the sub-cultures associated or derived from these genres, and the gendered, class and racial implications of mainstream criticism decrying them as morally un-sound or debaucherus and upsetting the status quo of time.
